Singapore is an island in progress, always becoming. Prototype Island explores the city-state not as a finished product, but as a living prototype; a terrain where design is continually tested, refined, and woven into the systems, rituals, and everyday structures that shape daily life. In a world defined by rapid change and constrained resources, design extends beyond the making of product-service systems; it is a vital tool for navigating complexity.
The exhibition transforms space into a living prototype: a material and conceptual reflection of Singapore’s true nature. No longer only a city or a nation, it is presented as a global testing ground for future forms of coexistence.
In an era shaped by climate volatility, resource pressure, and the rise of artificial intelligence, the project reimagines territory as a proto-civilisation in perpetual evolution.
Within this condition, design operates as both mirror and catalyst, shaping how human, technological, and ecological systems intersect and co-adapt.
From this central platform three main story-telling roads begin.
The Heat: which narrates the heat of the foundries, of the process of welding and the passion of the Bicycle frame master builder.
The Territory: which communicates the ecological value bicycle transport has and enables on the territory: from cycling to bike sharing, from daily commute to new economies.
The Future: innovation of materials, hybridization of categories in which the protagonists of the bicycle industry & craft continue to raise the bar of performance through the research and use of the latest technological discoveries, material innovations and fabrication skills.
Slender structures convey suspension and impermanence. The exhibited works do not stand as static monuments; they exist instead as adaptive, floating propositions — capable of reorganisation in response to shifting conditions. Their varied heights create a visual rhythm that expresses the fluid complexity of a society without a fixed model, one that continuously emerges through interaction, feedback, and adjustment.
The exhibition brings together established and emerging transdisciplinary designers to showcase projects that function as real-world experiments across three territories. Care Infrastructures and Cultural Continuities — reconfiguring social bonds and living heritage as active design systems. Technological and Material Ecologies — investigating bio-based processes, digital intelligence, and hybrid production logics. Everyday Infrastructures — reframing the operational systems that quietly structure contemporary life.
The material volumes symbolise the designer’s capacity to generate solidity from uncertainty, supported by an infrastructure that is resilient yet largely invisible — much like advanced urban ecosystems themselves.
Together, these suspended islands form a dynamic landscape: a constellation of autonomous micro-systems contributing to the imagination of a new proto-civilisation.
The visitor’s movement along the exhibition axis echoes life within a smart city, where technical knowledge, data, and collective intelligence remain constantly accessible, enabling coordination, resilience, and adaptive survival. Prototype Island positions Singapore as a laboratory for collective possibilities — a place where design functions as a civilising force, exploring how future societies might organise, adapt, and thrive amid continual transformation
Prototype Island was presented by DesignSingapore Council as Singapore’s national presentation at Milan Design Week 2026 from 21 April to 28 Apri in the prestigious Brera Design District.
